Using all 34k recorded Meteorite strikes, compiled by Nick Felton, I made two visualizations in OpenFrameworks (code here).
The first visualization is a map that plots the strikes on a globe against a colored background indicating population density. I was curious if more people correlated with more observed strikes. This tends to holds true, which makes me wonder: How many meteorites hit the Earth on a regular basis? How many meteorites are there just lying around waiting to be found? How many have been found but never recorded by western civilization?
The second visualization I made was more interactive: a Meteorite Baby-Naming ‘Book’ that lets you peruse the names of all found meteorites. Just in case you ever find your own, this might give you some ideas of what to, or not to, name your precious little extraterrestrial.
