Parametric / Procedural Dresses.

I see two common themes in parametric dresses and procedural dresses.

1. A study in making flexible materials. This means creating some sort of fold-able pattern that can be iterated though out the dress.

2. Trying to fit an algorithmic shape to bend with the body.

For my final project of a transforming dress, its not really important for the dress to by physically fold-able. However these flexible algorithms may be important because they are modular. This means that I can manipulate each individual shape on the dress. For example a parameter for the triangular dress, would be for the triangles to pop out and flatten.

The second theme of the dresses is much more important. I think for my project I have to figure out the curves that fit on a body and develop my procedural meshes using those curves so that they may be able to actually fit on the clothes.

A lot of these dresses are put onto hot fashion models. To be unique and also because I’m personally not super attached to fashion. I’m considering making outfits for an old king or young girl.

KUKA Revenge from KUKA Robotics

Explained: A robot arm dueling a human in a singing wine glass competition.

Chosen: Robots + Music = :D

Critiqued: I want more than just a presentation. Show me the workings, please.

TouchKeys from Andrew McPherson

Explained: Multi-touch decals for piano keys that allow for a novel hybrid interface.

Chosen: Related to my thesis work. Hardware + Sound + Programming

Critiqued: The installation process is extensive, and the price is relatively high.

“D-Coil” by Huaishu Peng. 2015

D-Coil is a pretty perfect example of what it means to have human-interactive control over machine fabrication. I’m not positive as to how this is being implemented but it appears as though the machine moves along while the hand chooses exactly where to go within the limits. I hope to have my project have more freedom in terms of the fabrication process, however, as this project is limited to the layer by layer coiling as the name implies. That being said, I think this project is incredibly close to what I plan on doing.

“WirePrint” by Stephanie Mueller. 2014

Stephanie takes an innovative look into the capabilities of a 3d printer by 3d printing prototypes using a wireframe instead of the typical stacking. I find this to be a benefit that my project will have as well. I think this can be expanded upon regarding patterns to be made. Stephanie’s work is purely about the function and efficiency of the fabrication and less about the design and beauty of it.

Stranger Visions
We are not careful about our DNA trail. We do not understand how much infromation our DNA carries about us. People are careful about privacy policy of their internet accounts but not careful about their DNA trail. Stranger vision is project of constructing 3D images of strangers using DNa that they leave behind in varius public samples. This is speculative project that combines forensic sceince and modrn fabrication technique to initiate conversation about culture of biological surveillance

VictimLess Leather
It’s a stitch less jacket grown completely using tissue culture. This project by Oran Catts is example of domain experts in field of biology using their expertise as medium to create art pieces that speculate future. This project demonstrates usage of tussue culture in future.

PATAKK

gif1

I’m interested in the process of using 2D elements to create an illusion of depth. This GIF by PATAKK creates an illusion of an organic motion in 3D which is similar to a creature. The GIF is monochrome but manages to convey the feeling of surface texture of this ‘imagined’ creature.

Happy Birthday to me
gif2

This GIF is quite unusual. I like choice of colors and surface texture of face and balloon depicted in the gif. This is also quite different that other gifs I came across. the face is merged with the background. The gif is subtle and weird at the same time. You don’t expect the face to open and the ballon to quietly fly away. The motion is looped in order to create an illusion that the mouth opens and keeps on spitting a balloon. Looping of the gif does not seem obvious but more real.
