TITLE: “1984×1984”

“1984×1984” by Lozano-Hemmer is part of his Shadow Box series. This interactive artwork uses a tracking system to find the location of a person. On a screen is a grid of numbers taken from Google Maps. When a person walks in front of the screen, they numbers change in “font, color, texture, and style.” All the numbers that are shown when someone walks in front of the piece show the number 1984. 1984 is a homage to the novel by George Orwell that describes the “collapse of privacy.” This piece is very well done and it is evident a lot of time was spent to collect numbers from houses on Google Maps. The piece is a success and the interaction is a lot of fun. The use of the number 1984 is effective because it is so recognizable as the title of Orwell’s famous novel. I really enjoy this piece.
